and sometimes guys don't seem to regain lost momentum...
...Heaps took the summer off after his freshman year to get married and didn't get in off-season workouts with his receivers. It affected him on the field that fall and also in the lockerroom. It was all downhill from there for him until he lost the QB1 position to Riley.

Tanner had an amazing freshman year filling in for injured Taysom Hill and then went back to QB2 when Taysom returned. Tanner never recaptured his early success and got worse over his final 3 yrs.

Even Taysom struggled his last year returning from another injury. There's a legit possibility that what we're seeing now with Wilson is what we can expect going forward, partly due to his banzai/kamikaze style of play. He loves to launch himself into the breach headfirst rather than make the smart play and it's very possible he will always be struggling and missing time and much needed reps healing from an assortment of injuries.

Mobile QB's have not faired well at BYU and the same can be said about BYU's offenses under the leadership of mobile QB's. They generally have struggled to break 30 pts a game (iirc I think they've avg'd around 28 pts a game or so) and it's entirely possible this lack of productivity is due to how much time they miss dealing with the plethora of injuries they incur due to their style of play. Riley Nelson, Taysom Hill and Zach Wilson have missed a combined 45 games during their BYU careers due to injury. I think missing reps early on due to injury can be a more devastating set back than we consider. Missed time and development is lost opportunity that doesn't get made up. It's a serious set back in the QB's progress and when lost is lost.

By contrast pocket QB's like John Beck and Max Hall have only missed a small fraction of that number. Is it any wonder that they have been more successful as a result in leading more prolific offenses while at BYU? I think you have to seriously consider that.
