It’s actually really simple.
Step 1: Acknowledge that we’re never, ever going to be invited to the P5.

Step 2: Look at the college football landscape and acknowledge that the highest platform for us to play on isnt going to be played in September, but in January in the NY6 (not the playoff, which will always be reserved for P5 teams, usually blue bloods).

Step 3: Realize that the clearest path to that highest platform lies in winning a G5 championship and finishing as the highest ranked G5 champion, which requires joining a conference.

Everything else is fluff. Independence is bound to fail for a variety of reasons- reasons that are even more clear than the reasons you state about the G5.

Exposure? Literally no one cares except BYU fans how many “eyeballs” watched BYU football games (and even if this did mattered, we could achieve the exact same ESPN partnership in the AAC, which is contracted with ESPN).

Money? To buy what? We’re not spending it on coaches, or facilities, or recruiting staff, or S&C staff. We use it to subsidize women’s tennis which is great. Learfield Cup standings reinforce the egos of BYU fans everywhere and are also nothing anyone but BYU fans care about. It has nothing to do with the current conversation because we don’t appear to use much of any of our supposed added revenue on football. (Also note that the $7M the AAC is receiving per team now is likely very similar to what we were getting on our first TV deal, who knows if we’ll get more in the future).

If you watched Clemson and LSU battle it out on Monday, and came away from that game thinking that BYU football has any place on the same field as those two teams, in that setting, you are delusional. They have light years better athletes, better coaching, better fans, better facilities, and most of all they are sponsored by institutions who will do literally anything to keep them at the pinnacle of the sport. BYU cares only that football goes to bowl games, doesn’t rape anybody, and produces enough revenue to subsidize the other sports so that the university doesn’t have to.

So yeah, I’m at the point where I look at reality and can pretty definitively say we should be in a G5. Which is where we will end up anyway, when Independence fails (which it will inevitably do— Holmoe has already stopped scheduling more games past 2025).
