Finally saw Booksmart — decent but overrated
Frankly a bit baffled by the overrating — reeks a bit of soft bigotry of low expectations for Olivia Wilde as director. There were some legitimately funny scenes (don't think I've ever seen the pizza delivery guy actor before but that scene was great), but there was something a hair off in many of them — maybe editing undermining timing? But the biggest flaw to me was probably that when it was time to land its biggest (only?) punch, the movie really stumbled. The protagonists' big blow up introduced too much new information to have any impact, and was produced by an eye-rollingly cliche failure by one character to say the obvious thing that a normal human would say and which would instantly eliminate any misunderstanding. Nothing in it that really resembles anything meaningful to actual teens — as turned to 11 as movies like Fast Times and Clueless and Superbad etc. may be at times, they at least have those kernels of lived teen experience in them somewhere. Some of the supporting characters were good (I liked the sad rich kid), but a lot of it felt like the teen comedy version of hysterical realism. The movie also somewhat tried to have its cake and eat it too on politics by throwing out a lot of progressive shibboleths (in ways teens have probably never spoken before) (plus Malala! Nasty women! Michelle Obama!) without actually engaging with it at all within the bounds of the movie's scenario. All of that said, in addition to some funny scenes, there were some well-shot ones: the imagined dance at the big party, the underwater scene, etc. The infamous drug-induced barbie doll scene was a bad decision though IMO. So, overrated but fun IMO. I don't get the outrage for Wilde not getting more attention for the movie, but I will probably watch whatever she makes next.
