We've been paying ours down like crazy and will be done next December.
I'm already feeling great about it. Can't wait to have it done. I'll be 53, no debt, can retire with a nice pension at 55.
For us peace of mind is worth much more than what we could make investing. Money isn't everything but that is easy to say when things go well. My wife is very low risk when it comes to money. We've put plenty away but could have made more with real estate by holding on to a few of the homes we lived in. However, I know the stress of that on my wife wouldn't have been anywhere near worth it.
By the way, it is amazing how fast you can pay things off once the kids move out!
