Don't get me wrong. I love being a professor, doing research, mentoring undergraduate and graduate students. I also love the freedom to pursue my own direction, being my own boss for the most part, and very flexible summers.
That being said, still being in debt a lot, slow raises except for mandatory promotion bumps, etc. are not things that my friend who became doctors, dentists, orthodontists, etc. are having to deal with. I sometimes feel bad that my kids will be grown and gone before I feel in a financial position to even take my kids on a academic conference trip overseas, go skiing as much as we want every winter, etc.
tl;dr - I am doing what I love, but for the amount of time I spent in school, postdoc, and grueling to get tenure, I wish there was more monetary compensation.
