My son had his 5th grade American History program tonight--patriotic and historical songs and dances. One of the classes got up on the stage to dance to Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,
There's a young man in that class that is disabled in a wheelchair. He obviously couldn't dance, but they included him. He was wheeled out to the front corner of the stage, and he had a paper horn in his hand. When the "bugling" solo part of the song came on, he stood up from his wheelchair, and struggled all the way across the stage while pretending to play. His teacher followed with his wheelchair, which he then slumped back down into, a little exhausted from the effort, but with a huge grin on his face. He was part of the rest of the dance, as his teacher wheeled him around.
It was so great to see him be included like that. My wife tells me the kids in his class are very inclusive--I believe it from what I saw tonight. That's really great to see.
