At a human trafficking symposium up at the U. Probably preaching to the choir,
but talk to your kids about online predators.

Monitor their devices, not just phones, but gaming consoles too. Any device they have. Go through their apps to make sure they aren't dangerous apps disguised as innocent looking ones.

Learn the lingo kids use in texts. Learn what emojis are used to convey explicit messages. Predators are always adapting their methods. Parents need to stay informed.

Teach them how to protect their privacy and the importance of not responding to phishing texts from people they don't know. Make sure you protect their privacy in things you post.

65% of girls and 53% of boys will go meet someone they only know online or through text. And those numbers may be underreported. That's terrifying to me.

Teach them the dangers of sexting and the consequences that could follow them through life if they aren't careful. Digital stuff never disappears, even Snapchat.

You never know who the perps are. It's not just the creepy old man in the basement. It might be the kid in your ward that left on a mission before being reported and arrested (this happened recently in South Jordan, UT). They will take as long as they need to groom a victim. Do everything you can to keep your child from becoming one.

If you are already doing this, great! If not, there's no time like the present. And if you don't know where to start, there are plenty of resources online to help out.

This concludes today's public service announcement. Mods, please recategorize if appropriate.
