it was about reality and what are we really. In the end, it was about technology that was are to capture who you were and crest an alternative reality. It doesn't actually deal with the afterlife. The person in San Junipero is a copy of the real person. At least that is how I see it. That person dies but there is an alternative reality that has been created for that persons "soul"
