So I was looking at the updated NET rankings, and I couldn't help but notice how important avoiding bad losses is for your ranking. I know that there are many factors, but if you compare BYU (#29) and Wisconsin (#30) you see some stark differences.
BYU
Q1 = 1-5
Q2 = 3-2
Q3 = 5-0
Q4 = 5-0
Wisc
Q1= 5-5
Q2 = 1-2
Q3 = 1-1
Q4 = 5-0
On the surface, Wisconsin has the better record: 4 more Q1 wins, 2 less Q2, but 1 Q3 loss. When looking at efficiency (Kenpom) BYU is only more efficient by 1 point per 100 possessions. So it appears that avoiding bad losses is more important than getting big wins in terms of having a high NET.
I realize that NET ranking is not necessarily related to NCAA seeding
