in a 2-fer-his-last-37 hitting slump walk up there, and strike out while still swing for the fences as if he's Hammerin' Hank? Doesn't someone who has to squat the whole game deserve a DH too? Where does it end?
The best-vs-best argument is thin when the entire point of a coaching staff is to make decisions within the constraints of the game to give one's team the greatest advantage possible, and you've already taken away the manager's ability to put a player out there who has a greater advantage.
I'd rather see the best available baseball player go up against the best available baseball player. A pitcher who doesn't hit and a hitter who doesn't field are not baseball players, they're half that.
And I'm willing to defer to a manager who has a proven track record of knowing which player in any given situation is the best one.
