Even if you are close to retirement you should still have a decent chunk of your
portfolio in equities. Most people would want want to have a good chunk in cash/fixed income to handle short term market drops. However, you also need your money to last 20 - 30 years and if you want to accomplish that you'll need a decent amount of money in equities up to and through retirement.
