Google Voice - really liking this so far
So I was on Google Fi for over a year and I love the service generally. It's very simple, straight-forward, and cheap. Of course, it connects to T-Mobile, Sprint, US Cellular etc. which for most people is just fine. For me though, it wasn't because at work (and for most of my commute) there is ONLY at&t. At work I get on wifi so I've survived but it's always been kind of annoying.

I decided to switch to Straight Talk with an at&t sim because I only have one phone; I don't need 12 lines with unlimited data. $45/mo for 25 Gigs, cool. Popped the sim in, no configuration necessary.

Now here's where Google Voice comes in. I ported my number to that service, rather than the Straight Talk service (which assigned me a new number). Now, when I text or call someone through Voice, it shows at my long time number. They see no difference. Plus, I can type out text messages on my PC or any device if I want to and they will be received as sms. They don't need to be using Voice. My number is finally free to go with me to any service, any device, no more waiting for numbers to port or getting passwords/pins, setting up settings on the phone etc; none of that.

Also, since the new sim was assigned a number I can use my normal text app or call for things where I don't want my long time number to show up such as KSL classifieds, dating (to avoid data-mining), whatever. Basically I have two phone numbers and only pay for one service.

Anyway, I think its pretty slick.
