3 of the top 5 teams in the Nation are 'Mid Majors' (Gonzaga, SDSU, Dayton)
This is one of the great things about Basketball, it really is an almost even playing ground. Anyone can build up a great team because it only takes a few special players. In College Football a mid major (UCF) can go undefeated for 2 straight seasons and not sniff the top 5.
