When Few got to Gonzaga (30 years ago)
When Mark got to Gonzaga as a $1,500 a year grad assistant, he was pulled aside by the Campus Elders and told .... "You will never win this league, and that's okay. Just don't finish last. Last place isn't tolerated around here".

Few and his two roommates (Dan Monson and Billy Grier) decided they'd try to change that paradigm.

At the start of the "cute little run" (21 straight dances) Gonzaga's recruiting budget ($8,000 a year) was dead last in the WCC. It wasn't until the 3rd of GU's back to back to back Sweet 16's (and beyond) '99-'01 that they finally got a high speed video machine for scouting purposes. Those babies cost $25k and until then, the old fashioned VCR worked just fine.

Things are different now ... and there are MANY other stories about the "early" days (i.e. stashing a beater car in the Bay Area because renting cars to recruit was just too expensive ... and ... actually sleeping in the car several times because .... that "too expensive thing again). And Mark has stayed the same person as he was when I met him in the late 80's/early 90's. That "Men of March" did a good job ....

Have fun tonight ... but not TOO much fun, please.
