I was attending BYU when Marty and Andy Toolson were playing together. That was
a good team. Andy Toolson was in my married student ward that year and was always a personable and friendly guy.

In 1990 that BYU team lost in heart-breaking fashion as a 12 seed to Clemson in the NCAA first round. Many of you will probably remember the play that should have sent the game to overtime but came up just short.

Unfortunately, Marty missed a bunny with 0:01 on the clock that would have tied it. BYU was down 49-47 and had the ball to inbounds from the middle of the left sideline with 1 or 2 seconds left on the clock. The play drawn up I think had Marty come up high in the key and then either a back-screen or just a cut to the basket. He cut to the basket and was wide open. The pass came from the inbounder as a long lob and was perfectly placed. Marty caught it a couple of feet from the rim and put it on the bankboard just short as time expired.

It was a late morning or early afternoon tip and I had a couple of classes during the game, so I was recording it on my VCR. I didn't want to know the result so I could watch when I got home. As I walked across campus it was just after the game had ended. There were a lot of students walking around and it seemed like a downer vibe was being put out. Then I heard someone in another group yell "dang it" or something like that. I was hoping I was mistaken in my interpretation, but then watched for myself and saw that gut-wrenching ending.

Anyway, I watched a lot of games in person at the MC with Marty Haws as point guard. I've never seen a quicker guard at BYU. Just an amazing player. I think Tyler and TJ get the nod slightly overall because of mid-range jump-shooting (Tyler) and scoring prowess & play-making ability (TJ)
