tournament. A couple years ago, I had an old man yank on my shirt and yell at me that he didn't pay $400 to stare at my *yewt* all game. That was literally my first interaction with him all game. I'm sure it must have just been brewing inside him for a while and he finally exploded rather than just talk to me.
The funny thing is I honestly don't stand much compared to others I observe at sporting events. The main times I stand is when BYU makes an exceptional play or there is a timeout or break where BYU has been playing really well. I never just stand while the ball is live unless the rest of the BYU fans are all standing (like happens when there is a big run or something like that or the end of the game).
My theory for the angry old Gonzaga fans that yell at fans to sit down is that they have been going to this tournament for years and years without any type of competition or fan base that even comes close to bringing the number of fans they bring. St. Mary's doesn't even bring many fans. They don't like that BYU joined and brings a significant amount of fans to the tournament and they feel a little threatened. They aren't used to it even years later and want it to be like it was before we joined where I am certain they absolutely owned the entire arena (even more so than they already do).
If BYU can start winning more and competing better at the tournament, I think it is possible for us to go toe to toe with the Zags on the amount of fans they bring. Currently they still own the arena and they do every single year, but hopefully I think this year may be our best showing we have had since joining the conference.
