I’ve always held this back for FO only but here it is:
We had neighbors across the street that had some pit bulls. They got out occasionally & my mom would put them back in their yard.
One day my mom wasn’t home. She left me, my baby brother & my older sister home alone for a few hours. I looked out the window and saw the dogs were loose again but this time the cops were there. The dogs were wagging their tails & sniffing the cops. I told my sister that the dogs were out & the cops were looking at them & I was going to help the cops put the dogs back in their yard.
What I didn’t know was the dogs had recently attacked another boy & his mom on another street. The boy was seriously injured & taken to the hospital. The cops were there to find the dogs.
I stepped out of the door and walked 20 feet toward the cops then I yelled, “hey, I know where those dogs belong.”
Almost instantly the dogs charged me. I ran toward a large tree but knew I wouldn’t make it. I didn’t want to get pulled down on our concrete steps so I headed for the side yard to jump the fence.
I didn’t make it. One dog circled me and lunged at my face & neck. Another grabbed my leg from behind & the third lunged for my stomach. I went down to the ground. I remember pushing hard on the one on my face. I could feel the other two shaking my stomach & leg.
The officer had his gun drawn & pulled the one off my face. It immediately tried to attack him & he shot it, killing it. The other two dogs suddenly stopped. He shot the second dead. I was on my knees covering my ears bawling. I think it was my first time to here gunfire. The third dog ran & he shot it but it ran away. It was recovered under a house the next day, injured but still alive.
I had good doctors, a Priesthood blessing and recovered over several months. Looking back even now it was a terrifying event & I know I was blessed to survive.
