So I just got a citation notice from my rental car company that I missed a toll. In addition to the fine for missing the toll, the car rental company tacked on a $20 administrative fee.

The problem is I paid the toll online within an hour of missing it because I didn't have enough coins at the toll booth. After calling the Illinois tollway, I cleared up the confusion. Apparently when I paid the toll online I selected that the car was a "passenger vehicle" instead of a "fleet vehicle". The rep let me know that because the license plate started with "FP" that is a dead giveaway that it was a fleet vehicle instead of a passenger vehicle. Most people already know that intuitively. I feel so incredibly dumb that I would have done that.

Anyways, after clearing up my error in judgement, the violation was removed on the tollway's end. Next up I got to call the rental car agency and explain to them what happened. They were nice enough to waive the administrative fee as well.

So the moral of the story is DO NOT confuse passenger vehicles with fleet vehicles in the state of Illinois.
