The fact that BYU has inserted themselves onto the contract process complicates
things in Provo. BYU could insert themselves further and state that a condition for BYU approved status in the future would be for landlords to allow students to break their lease without penalty in this circumstance. BYU wields a pretty big hammer with their BYU Approved Housing status. Landlords would still be well within their rights to insist that students hold up their terms of the lease but the future consequences might not be financially tenable for a landlord.
