I like the question.
IF your goal is to prolong life at all costs you take very different actions.
- You eat only whole fruits and vegetables
- Stay away from salt and preservatives
- You avoid large crowds and generally live indoors.
- You never get in a car - especially on the highway. And NEVER drive faster than 35.
- See a doctor monthly for an invasive health checkup to look for ANY signs of cancer.
- Grandma should NEVER see her grandkids - infectious little brats...

On the other hand, if your goal is to live as long as you possible can, while preserving the highest quality of life possible, you have to make concessions.
Every time I get in a car, I know I may not see my family again. I hate to say it, but that's worth it. I'm playing the odds with mine and my family life, but the quality of life is worth it.
A delicious med-rare steak - Oh, soooo worth it. Definitely playing the odds with heart disease.

It's very easy to forget that every action we take has risks and rewards. In anything in life, when we forget balance we get in trouble.
For those who want to protect grandma, they can. It comes at a cost to them, and their loved ones. Sometimes it's a monetary cost, sometimes it's a standard of living cost.

Infeectious diseases are odd. Because your decisions and risk profile may impact me. That's why govt thinks they need to get involved. Personally I only find it odd that for something that looks to kill at most likely 2-3X more Americans than the flu each year we impose martial law and destroy people's livelihoods. But to rid the country of other infectious diseases that could impact us for decades if the make a resurgence, we allow anti-vaxers to make their own choice. That's the real disconnect I don't understand.

Either it's my choice to accept the risk that may impact others, or it's not.
