If herd immunity is the thing that will bring this thing to a halt, is it a
reasonable option to hope you get exposed early when healthcare services are plentiful and not overwhelmed? I talked to a guy last night who had this opinion. His theory is that he's healthy and not in one of the at-risk groups. The odds are strongly in his favor that if/when he gets exposed, he'll be at very low risk of significant health issues. In order to better his odds, he's not taking preventative measures, with the hope that if he contracts the virus, it will be early in the curve. If, in the extreme case he has health complications, he'll have ample access to healthcare services and have better odds of surviving.

I understand the theory. I can see why someone would take that position. We're a long ways away from a vaccine. The herd immunity theory says that somewhere in the neighborhood of 70% of the population needs to be exposed to the virus for the spread to stop or slow down to minimal levels. I guess if you're healthy and very low risk to contract pneumonia or having any of the other side effects, you can take that approach.
