Rewatched most of last season the past 2 weeks. I have a few thoughts
Zach is the best QB by a decent margin. His good moments are significantly under appreciated on CB and his lowlights are significantly exaggerated. Way too many mistakes are blamed on him that shouldn’t be.

Jaren is a stud. He isn’t better than Zach but he’s really darn good. It would have been great to see him play in more games. It is obvious that the offense wasn’t as complex for him or Baylor. There is an argument that Zach should run that same offense.

Baylor is good but he is given way too much credit for the wins against USU and BSU. He didn’t make big mistakes but he was completely lost when his first read wasn’t open. His deep ball to Shumway in the 3rd(?) quarter was BEAUTIFUL. He is good but he’s a good step behind Wilson and Hall.

Our OL is not given enough credit. They were actually pretty dang good. They did give up a few bad sacks/pressures but given their injuries, Mateos/Grimes did a really good job with them. This surprised me because I was too critical of them during the season.

The RBs, outside of Williams, were good but not great. Finau looked the best and Katoa was consistently good but never great like Williams.

WRs were better than the previous year but lack athleticism. They attacked the ball better than I’ve seen the past few years which is encouraging. I’m excited for the new guys coming in with high-level athleticism. Fesi seems to get the most out of his guys.

The offense was significantly better than I remember. Lack of points and red zone offense was frustrating and needs to be worked on. Ultimately that is what matters but I am encouraged by rewatching the play calling and designs. I think the offense will be much better this year.

The defensive scheme was even more maddening on tape than I remember during the season and I was pretty livid during the season. That said, the LBs are dang good and the CBs are also really good even though they are really young. We have some studs at both positions.

We will really miss Dayan but I think Chaz will evolve into a star this year. I remembered Tooley being good but after rewatching, he is big-time. I wish he would move to DE but if his body won’t hold the weight, I think he will be a star in at safety/flash.

I think moving to a 4-2-5 actually makes a lot of sense. I wasn’t sold on it but I think a couple of the LBs, primarily Chaz and Max, will be better served as nickel backs than true LBs.

Another LB that was better than I remembered is Wilgar. I. Kaufusi, aside from a couple interceptions, has a tough start to the year but really finished strong. He had a hard time tackling at the beginning of the year but by the end of the season he was one of our best LBs.

I think the bend don’t break system is good for keeping points off the board but it consistently gave the O really long fields which I think was a big reason we struggled to score as many points. I think a more aggressive D will lead to more points given up but also more points scored by the O.

The interior DL was actually really good. The DL was given a tough hand by Tuiaki never sending LBs and only rushing 3. Overall, I don’t think the defensive players were all that bad.. the playcalling made them look a million times worse than they were. It was obvious that the scheme changed against USU and BSU but went back to the same vanilla defense after those games. It makes no sense, but it seems pretty clear that’s what happened.

I’m not a film expert so I expect lots of people to disagree. I’d love to hear any disagreements and welcome all hate for my undoubtably terrible opinions.
