There was an Elder who would hit all the thrift stores for LL Bean and Land's End stuff. Once a week, he would box up everything he had accumulated, and send it in for their unconditional money-back guarantee. This is not a mission rumor. I personally saw a check for over $3,000. (I believe their policies have changed, by now. At the time, this was leftover from them being little Maine companies that were just really committed to their products and customers.)

Eventually, the companies got wise to it, and refused to send him specifically refunds without original receipts. So, he started what he called his "Elder XXXXX reverse tithing program," where he would pay missionaries 10% of whatever the check was, just for sending it off in their name.

Fun side story. One day, a sister in my zone called me up and asked if she and her companion could come talk with me. She was a mess when I spoke with her.
