Some prefer we don’t remove this from context. If the only
thing you’re doing is talking about the value of a single life, it’s priceless. If all we do is focus on that, we’d pay any price to save it.

But removing this from context ignores the deaths our response will cause. That’s right. Shutting down the way we have done will cause deaths from other causes.

It also ignores the reality that we’ll deal with death all the time. And we make decisions about acceptable levels of risk in order to live life.

There’s a point on one end of the spectrum that would be wreckless. And there’s a point at the other end of the spectrum that would make preserved life not even worth living. The tension is a disagreement about where to find the right balance in the middle of those two points.

People bringing up deaths from other causes tend to believe we’ve swung way too far to virus prevention at the expense of the deaths and destruction our response will cause. You disagree. That’s fine. But removal of all context is actually more illogical than trying to place things in context.
