As float bait. Keep it close to the shore and look for areas they would bed like grass, trees or docks. Drop it in there and let it sit for about 10 sec and move with small cranks of the reel.

The goal is to aggravate them to attack the bait.

I always keep a low depth crank bait with me as a sure way to catch something as well. Plus you are always reeling so it's a good way to keep a younger kid occupied.
