Do you know who Huey Lewis credits for saving Huey Lewis and the News in those early days? Jeff "Mutt" Lange. Yes the music producer of some of the biggest albums from Def Leppard, AC/DC, Bryan Adams, Heart, etc. And the guy who was once married to Shanaia Twain and launched her career.
The first Huey Lewis and the News album did not sell well. The second album was looking pretty generic and Huey figured the album doesn't sell enough and they don't get a new contract after that. He is desperate and reached out to Mutt who he had gotten to know when he was living in England years previously when working with other bands. Mutt had this idea of a song called "Do you Believe in Love" but wasn't sure what to do with it. He gave it to Huey and that became the biggest hit on the second album. Subsequently Sports and Fore were two of the biggest selling albums in the '80s and sent the band into stardom.
Pretty interesting.
