The program is right where decision makers want it.
Or, right where decision makers expect it to be based on the resources they put into it.

When you frame everything through the lens of low expectations a lot of what BYU does makes sense. The objectives are to produce a quality education at bargain basement prices, the chance to find another Mormon to marry, and maybe have a neat athletic experience while you’re at it. Being excellent at athletics is a worthy pursuit as long as it aligns with the above and you don’t draw too much attention to yourself.

Those in the administration that see things differently are clearly either unable or unwilling to make substantive changes to make it happen. And so extending Kalani makes a lot of sense: he takes us to the crappy bowls games we get contracted as an Indy, runs a clean program mostly and is a nice guy. And he probably is a decent coach, just not the caliber of coach who can turn water into wine like this predecessor did for over a decade.

The only reason why Kalani will ever fear for his job is if he stops going to bowl games and/or the football program ceases generating enough revenue to subsidize the rest of the AD so the university doesn’t have to.
