I think the complaint is that we do it all the time instead of situationally...
...vs a specific team or two. It worked well vs Jordan Love at Utah St but was horrible vs Cole McDonald and Hawaii. Against Hawaii our coverage in the secondary looked confused all the time and gave up big play after big play. It's not a scheme, it's like you said, a tool or feature, wrinkle, an element of your gameplan that you throw at a specific team.

I think a perfect game plan for us is rush 3 and then mix in that 4th guy as a disguised blitz so that the QB and OL never knows from one play to the next who it will be and when or from where he'll come. My beef with Tuiaki is that he doesn't seem very creative when he does decide to bring extra guys. He makes it obvious who it is.

I loved how Bronco was creative in bringing an extra rusher in his 3-4 scheme vs Oklahoma in 2009. It was always someone different and coming from a different spot, not just lining up someone on the edge. iirc I think the hit that knocked Sam Bradford out of the game was a delayed stunt by Clawson where he looped from the outside around and up the middle untouched to nail the QB. He didn't get the sack but he forced Bradford to rush his throw and Clawson got a clean hit on the QB. Guys like Payton Wilgar, JJ Nwigwe, Tyler Allgeier or Max Tooley could've been really effective in this manner.

Last season I think Tuiaki could've done amazing things using Dayan Ghanwoloku more to rush the QB. Dayan was explosive, fast and a good tackler and hitter. He would've been devastating. In the few times he did rush the QB he was able to tie for the team lead in sacks. Tuiaki should've used him or maybe Austin Lee or Austin Kaufentzis more in that role to mix it up. The Utes in the early days of the Whittingham era used to get a lot of sacks using corner and safety blitzes. It was very effective.

I think the criticism was warranted on Tuiaki this past year and he's not without options to get pressure on the QB without depleting the coverage in his secondary. His scheme just lacked creativity.
