Throwback Thursday: 1975 Montreal Canadiens vs Soviet Red Army
New Year's Eve 1975 in Montreal. Some call it the greatest hockey game ever played. The Soviets came over and played a handful of NHL teams as part of an exhibition tour, and these games were a big deal. This was just a few years after the '72 Summit Series. These Habs were stacked with NINE Hall of Famers (10 if you count coach Scotty Bowman) and would go on to win the next 4 straight Stanley Cups, capping off a stretch of 10 Cups in 15 seasons.
Fun fact: the only team to beat the Red Army on this tour was the 2-time defending champs Flyers, who Broad Street Bullied (aka played supremely dirty and beat the living hell out of) the Soviets to the point where they left the ice and were prepared to forfeit until NHL and NHLPA officials threatened to withhold their payment.
