One thing people don’t know about him is how frugal he is...
The OP gave a little hint at it but it’s much more than that.

For instance he picked up pennies, or any change, that he saw on the ground. If he happened to find bigger change, like a nickel, he would almost get jubilant.

He also collected antiques, junk really. His vehicle that he drove every day everywhere was a Ford Econoline van with all of the seats removed. The only seat in it was the drivers seat. This was so that he could haul all of his treasures he’d find or buy at yard sales. He frequented yard sales, went very weekend, looking for stuff. If he had a truck like the OP said I never saw it, he drove that van everywhere, to practice, games, everyplace.

My brother lives in mapleton and
one time Jerry called him and told him he was in Utah county and wanted to k ow if he wanted to go to lunch. So Jerry came to his house in his van to pick him up and when my brother went to get in there weren’t any seats so Jerry told him he’d have to sit on a 5 gallon bucket 😂

Then he took him to Gandolfos, Jerry’s favorite sandwich place, and as they walked across the parking lot Jerry was picking up pennies.

We went pig hunting down on the Tejon ranch I. SoCal with Jerry and his son Brian. We told him if he wanted to fly into Las Vegas we’d pick him up there and drive the rest of the way into the Tejon ranch which is above Bakersfield. It was the summer so Jerry was at home in Illinois. But he told us that if he flew into SLC that the Jazz pay for his plane ticket to he preferred to fly there and drove with us the entire way, 11 hours. His favorite place to eat breakfast was Shonies so we had to stop in Cedar City to eat breakfast at Shonies.

While we were all at the ranch hanging out his son Brian was telling me stories about how it was growing up with Jerry. Keep in mind he was playing and/or coaching in the nba so he had plenty of money but Brian said they’d be driving around town and Jerry would spot a garbage can in front of a house with a mop handle or something sticking out of it and he’d stop and start digging through it seeing if there was anything of “value”. Then inevitably someone would come out of the house yelling “hey what the h... are you doing in my garbage?!” Then they’d see who it was and would be “Hey you’re Jerry Sloan!” And Jerry would barely look up and say “how you doing” while continuing to dumpster dive 😂

And there are tons more I could tell you. He was a real character.
