Psychologists can't prescribe meds. Psychiatrists are super hard to get an appointment with. I think
it's pretty common to have family docs manage meds for something as common as anxiety. That said, it may be worthwhile to find a psychologist with a collaborating Dr. who helps manage meds for their practice. Some have started having a PA work with them as well. Most family Dr's do a good job and I wouldn't hesitate to start there. Counseling will be most helpful for cog/beh strategies.
