Didn’t see it already mentioned, but our dishwasher has a tray at the very top
for silverware. (It's basically a third rack up top.) Maybe most come with them now, but if not, it's an amazingly simple thing that makes a huge difference.
You can lay all your silverware in the topmost rack side-by-side and it saves a lot room on the bottom rack.
Ours is a GE Profile. The rack looks like this:
