I'll admit that as a fan of the books, some of the changes in the film adaptations bother me. For instance, in the film, I hate that Frodo tells Sam to leave, and so Sam abandons Frodo and Gollum on the way to Shelob's Lair. I also hate that Sam shows temptation towards the ring; in the book, he is never tempted by it. But I also can understand those choices to add dramatic effect, and even to show that nobody is safe from the influence of evil.
But so many changes that Jackson made in the films were spot on. The changes to Aragorn's character arc that the article mentions were so good in making Aragorn dynamic and relatable. Removing Tom Bombadil and the scouring of the shire to keep an appropriate flow for the movies. And through it all, the spirit and themes of the book ooze out of every aspect of the films.
