I felt that the "creative liberties" that Jackson made with the films were wholly appropriate, and he was smart to avoid certain liberties as well (such as the 'final battle' between Aragorn and Sauron at the Black Gates).

It seems like Jackson made ALL the right choices with those movies. I don't know if they could have been done better than they were.
