Never had any luck reconditioning a lead-acid battery once it is sulfated.
Also, real talk: if your wife's grandpa returns it, he should be ashamed of himself. Lead acid batteries go bad if they are not kept charged up, regardless of how new they are. The battery is toast because of neglect, not defect. Buy a new battery, hook it up to a tender, and move on without repeating the mistake.
