I had no idea myself, until I read a short article by Steven L. Kwast, ret. Air Force general-- there are urgent energy,

military, security, and political problems and opportunities right now in the space frontier that other countries (namely, China) are starting to take advantage of, and we are lagging behind in. He explains really well why our current Air Force has almost zero ability to do what's necessary to protect these interests of ours:
