In Richmond, and they didn’t like Mac. They were too nice to come out and say it directly, b/c southern hospitality.
But they thought he was overhyped, self-centered, and was a creation of stage parents - a father who was a college athlete and a super promoter.
It’s not to say Mac hasn’t changed, or even that his arrogance isn’t a net positive...gives him an edge...but it is noteworthy that he has never been a great fundamental basketball player.
He is not a great ball handler - career assist to TO ratio is almost 1:1. Akinjo handled most of the actual PG duties The past couple of years (before he transferred mid season b/c he wasn’t a good PG, either, but mostly b/c he couldn’t stand playing with Mac).
Mac is a sub 40% FG and sub 30% 3pt shooter for his career. He did improve his 3 pt % this season, on fewer attempts.
Mac is a fun player to watch. His highlight reels are off the chain. And he is barely 6’1”, which makes his dunking prowess that much more impressive. Provo would have welcomed Mac and he could have been a BYU legend.
But he also might have destroyed the chemistry Pope has worked so hard to build. I like to think Pope could have corralled his energy, and I am disappointed we won’t get to see his fierceness, but I am ready to move on. I like the roster we have.
