Not much better IMO than a cold morning & a bull bugling. Elk hunting was my
dads passion....when he passed away a few years ago, a little under 70 years old, he had taken 40 bulls in his life. All self-guided hunts, many in Idaho. Pretty crazy to think about now, 40 bulls.

We used to take in a pack string of horses and mules in August into the back country with a wall tent, stove, and other gear and bury it so nobody would find and steal it before hunting season and then spend a few days scouting. Then come hunting season we'd go into the back country, big ole string of mules, and spend a week, sometimes more, hunting. A lot of great memories with my dad but amongst the very best were the cool mornings and not seeing another human, hunting elk, and in the afternoon listening to Paul James broadcasting the BYU game on a little radio. Definitely some of the best times of my life.

My dad got every animal that I can think of in the western US - several griz, lots of black bear, lots of deer, antelope, a sheep, a mtn goat, but elk, man, that was his thing. Drove me mom nuts for a lot of years that we'd be in the truck and my dad would be working on that cow call or down in the basement practicing bugling.
