So do you want to hear something amazing? I went back and looked at a couple of
random seasons when BYU had great attendance. In the early 90s, Cougar Stadium had a capacity of just over 65,000. Just about every game had an attendance of over 65,000! Look at 1992. SDSU - 65,261. UCLA - 65,761. USU - 65,475. In other words, according to you, essentially every single ticket was being used during a mediocre season. Let's take a look at a game in 1993. On November 27, 1993, BYU was 5-5 and UTEP was coming to town. BYU had lost 5 of its last 6 games, including its previous game against Utah. This was the Saturday after Thanksgiving, so tons of students were gone and lots of other folks were probably traveling over the holiday. The temperature at kickoff was 18 degrees. Guess what the attendance was? 63,649! That's like 98% capacity.
