If the goal is to keep a high-value employee, this usually won’t work.
They want something in writing, unless they’re getting a monthly bonus that keeps them around, so if it doesn’t come to fruition or live up to expectations they can bounce easily. Most high-value employees will look elsewhere if it’s just a “trust me, I’ll give you a great bonus at the end of the year” deal.
