Today’s highlight: Zibanejad’s golden goal for Sweden at the 2012 World Juniors
Great goal, big reaction from a pro-Sweden crowd in Calgary. Sweden had won over fans by virtue of one key characteristic: they were not Russia, who beat Canada 6-5 on the back of a Kuznetsov hat trick in an INSANE game in the semis, where Canada was down 6-1 in the 3rd and very nearly came all the way back. I included highlights from that game just for kicks, too. This was just one year after Canada blew a 3-0 3rd period lead in the gold medal game against... Russia. This was just a wild tournament all around, as Russia needed OT to even get through their quarterfinal game vs the Czechs and Sweden barely knocked off Finland in the semis (went to a shootout).
Fun fact: in the 8 years since this game, neither Sweden or Russia have won gold, although they have combined for 6 silvers and 5 bronzes. Canada, Finland (3 each) and USA (2) have won the last 8.
