Iphones are incredibly easy to repair
Have him scan facebook marketplace or another outlet and buy a used / broken one. Then have him study youtube and learn how to repair it. I do this all the time and get a rebuilt iphone for $100 or so. I repaired one yesterday for my son. Took 20 minutes and $22. 🙂
