If over 10 (maybe 8 depending on the kid), take them target shooting, teach them
how the gun works, how it is a tool that can be a great or very terrible, teach them and help them handle it so there isn't fear, but respect and understanding.

The #1 rule is having your firearm locked and safe. Ideally, IMO, where any ammo is not easily accessible. I live in a pretty safe area so I'm generally not concerned about using a firearm for self-protection.
