the same movements most of the big names use and have access to (except for those that have inhouse movements of course). I like a lot of what Hemel has put out. Quality movements and decent, clean designs.
Not a micro but I do like the Hamilton Khaki line. The day date versions are sharp. I've also recently started liking the Out of Order watches. probably a bit more to them than you are describing above but they have a nice look and you can tell an OOO when you see it.
At $1500 I'd probably be looking for a Tudor or a similar mini-grail watch. You're going to get a very nice watch from the Rolex company with the Tudors. It won't appreciate or be a collectible quite like a Rolex but it'll be different from most time pieces out there and be a quality watch for most days.
