An earlier post reminded me of something insane that happened about 10 years ago
Greatest civilian con job ever. I was an ops officer in a fighter wing. I flew during the day and was partially responsible for some maintenance activities on some AGE equipment at weekly or monthly intervals. It was an administrative responsibility. The SOP and trainer showed me how to check the log books and do some visual inspections. Mostly we relied on civilian employees to do the work with contractors. I dutifully checked the logs and talked to the civilian employee who was responsible. This went on for over a year. I get deployed, I transitioned the work to another officer and forgot about it. I get back 6 months later and in talking to the guy who replaced me in that responsibility, he basically never did the oversight role, like never, not once. The usaf paid out millions for work that never happened. I escalated it and nobody cared. There was a report written, statements taken and it never went further. I was reassigned elsewhere and in talking to people years later, nothing ever happened to anyone. It was crazy and dangerous. The federal government is a money pit.
