Gotta get this off my chest. Yes, I wish BYU wasn't so full of itself
that we could open up our hiring of coaches much wider than we currently do.

Yes, Kalani was a weak hire.

Many here probably disagreed w me — but given our hiring restrictions I thought Dr. Bob (even w his obvious baggage) was clearly the best candidate w interest at the time. He has a lot more HC potential than many fans wanted to see.

That being said, Kalani (& staff) deserve a lot of credit for increasing our team (& particularly defensive) speed by going freely outside the safety of the LDS recruiting confines. I realize Bronco & staff would occasional sign a non-LDS player, but they didn't actively seek such kids throughout the recruiting process. In each case these typically black players somehow fell to us --or were directed to us-- for one reason or another.

But Kalani had different plans from the start about how he was going to recruit at BYU.

And truth is — the much BIGGER credit that Kalani & staff are owed isn't the quality of athletes they've been getting in these non-LDS students — so much as it's the rightness of fit these kids seem to be for BYU.

Kalani also deserves credit for fostering an environment (& dare I say "CULTURE") in which these kids --with very few exceptions-- have chosen to stay the course at BYU.

His successes in these regards are unprecedented at the levels we've been seeing ...so if you've failed to give him due credit, you should probably consider it.
