ground up, and turning what we have now into a public, or semi public system. If we had worked on this when medical costs were relatively low 50 or 60 years ago, we could have similar costs and out comes. I don't know of any country in the world that when from a system like ours to a public system. I think the single biggest mistake we made was allowing third parties (i.e. insurance companies) into the equation. Destroyed healthcare as a market and introduced all sorts of perverse incentives. If we had created a public, or semi public system before insurance got involved, I think we would be in the same place as everyone else basically. I have no idea how we attack the problem now. Really seems like it would require a simultaneous dismantling of insurance companies and health care conglomerates, lowing of the cost of medical schools and doctors' salaries, pharmaceutical reform, price transparency, etc.
