It has NOT been maintenance free, of course.
But at 188K miles, the A/C has always worked, it runs strong and smooth, and shows little to no signs of stopping. It is a gas hog (17mpg combined, probably 22mpg if we did freeway only trip), it has the ride of a large body-on-frame truck with a worn suspension. But it shows little to no signs of stopping, has great 4wd system with low range and traction control, holds my family and our gear and is essentially "Free" at this point as it isn't depreciating any more and has been paid off for a long time. Seriously, judging by KSL listings its value has actually increased a little bit in the last two years. The ONLY thing not working on it right now is a tire-pressure sensor, which I plan on fixing next tire rotation. With that repair, everything on it will function same as it did 12ish years ago.
An incomplete list of repairs:
Rear wheel bearings and hubs (this was just Saturday).
New shocks, struts, control arms, and CV axles on the front.
Replaced drive-shaft u-joints.
Alternator
Starter (I think. . . maybe I am just thinking of alternator)
Some coolant hose assembly (this was actually a bid deal, and pretty annoying. Horribly designed plastic juncture).
Coolant (was worried I had a leak, but turns out you lose some to over-spill (expansion) and evaporation over 12 years).
Batteries, Oil, Filters, Tires, brake pads.
Front Rotors (rear are original still, and look fine).
Charcoal Evap Canister (emission control problems suck, but it wasn't too expensive and did it myself).
Diff lubricant.
Spark Plugs back around 100K. Probably time for another set.
A few random sensors along the way.
There is a small amount of worry that the timing chain guides could go bad. But it sounds fine, and as much "fun" as that job would be, I'm not up for it right now.
