People are weird, just got accused of being both racist & sexist by an employee
I own my own business, small, 11 full-time team members. We have a team member, 40 year old hispanic woman, who is quitting to take another job because it pays $1.50 more per hour, but doesnt have health or, retirement plan, like we do, but she thinks she'll come out ahead further with the $1.50 more per hour than with benefits. She is a nice person, average intellect, far from a top performer, and after several years with us still makes some bone-headed mistakes.

With today being her last day she was meeting with our Director of Operations to get her pay out on accrued vacation, sick, etc (I'm on vacation so this is what I was told after by our D.O.) and in the course of that conversation the team member shared that she felt that she wouldnt ever be able to go further with the business because:

1) she is short and overweight (her words, not mine) and I (business owner) obviously have a preference for "thin white girls" because....wait for it....."thats the type of girl he is married to." (EDIT: she said a bit more on physical attributes but I edited that from the OP) Now to be clear, my wife has been inside my office maybe 3 times in the last year, she has no interest in my business, she doesnt know the name of any team members other than our DO and has met this employee at most 2x in the past year. But the employee literally said she didnt think she could go further with us because she does doesnt think I like people who are short and overweight. (now the irony here is that she was telling this to our Director of Ops who is probably 5'2 to 5'4 and is very heavyset weightwise and openly talks about her struggles with weight and possibly getting gastric bypass)

2) She also said she didnt think she could go further because "he must not like Hispanics" or else she would have gotten more frequent raises. Our D.O. asked if there was any sort of incident and the employee said no, and of course there has been none, but she assumes that I "must not like Hispanics" because she hasnt gotten any raise this year. When our D.O further questioned her to make sure there had been no incidents, and asked if she thought she should have gotten a raise despite our business being down in revenue due to quarantine/coronavirus, the employee reiterated that she hadnt seen or experienced anything to suggest that I didnt like hispanics but she assumes that is the case.

I'm really bothered by it, to just take the mental position of assuming I don't like hispanics, (with no supporting evidence) and to specifically draw a conclusion that I wouldnt like her because I'm MARRIED to a somewhat tall white girl is just so frustrating. Now, she is leaving on good terms and even said I'm be best boss she has ever had, BUT she just assumes I'm racist and sexist. Our D.O. was pretty pissed and I'm so annoyed....it just seems so uncool, and mentally warped to assume me as a white male is sexist or racist despite no evidence and use only as a rationale that I'm white and that she looks different than my wife? And in a time when real racism does exist to assume that is the reason for not getting a raise yet this year.....so warped and aggravating.
