I use VTIP, which is an ETF for short term inflation protected gov. securities
for any money i wish to keep in cash over $250K. I think it's a pretty reliable 2-3% gainer, and safer than cash.

Long term Treasury ETFs, such as TLT or even TIP, are subject to much more principal risk, of course.

But for the most part i'm in stocks and can cash them in within 3 days.
